Carlos Bocanegra Signs With Chivas USA

SOCCER: OCT 16 Guatemala v USA

After a huge roster shake up within the club, Chivas USA has made their first acquisition since then  in US international, Carlos Bocanegra.  The 34 year old veteran defender had been a free agent since his loan ran out with Spanish side, Racing Santander.  While he expressed interest in returning to Scottish side, Glasgow Rangers one his loan with Santander ran up, the former USMNT captain instead has come back to Major League Soccer, signing with Chivas.

The Los Angeles club sent their first round pick in the 2015 Superdraft and 16th Allocation Pick to Toronto FC for the MLS rights to Bocanegra, who as a US International was subject to allocation order.  A native of southern California, Bocanegra’s return was likely contingent on going to either Chivas or the LA Galaxy.  He becomes the second USMNT centerback to join MLS in recent days, joining new San Jose Earthquakes man Clarence Goodson, who is currently in camp with the Gold Cup team.

This will mark Bocanegra’s second stint in MLS, as he started his playing career with the Chicago Fire.  While there, he would win multiple awards, including Rookie of the Year and two Defender of the Year awards, becoming the first MLS player to receive that honor twice; once in 2002 and once in 2003.  In his four years in the league, Boca had five goals and eight assists.

Bocanegra joins a sinking Chivas side that this year has already fired head coach Jose “El Chelis” Sanchez Sola.  They currently sit dead last in the Western Division, with a 3-10-3 record.  The signing brings both new life and star power to a team that desperately needs it.

Bocanegra will be eligible to join Chivas when the International Transfer Window opens June 9th.

Stay tuned to The Soccer Desk, as Richard McGovern will have a more in depth piece on Bocanegra’s signing later in the week.
